Heuristics for Semirandom Graph Problems

چکیده
We consider semirandom graph models for nding large independent sets, colorings and bisections in graphs. These models generate problem instances by blending random and adversarial decisions. To generate semirandom independent set problems, an independent set S of n ver-tices is randomly chosen. Each edge connecting S with S is chosen with probability p, and an adversary is then allowed to add new edges arbitrarily , provided that S remains an independent set. The smaller p is, the greater the control the adversary has over the semirandom graph. We give a heuristic that with high probability recovers an independent set of size n whenever p > (1 +) ln n==n, for any constant > 0. We show that when p < (1 ?) ln n==n, an independent set of size jSj cannot be recovered, unless NP BPP. We use our result for maximum independent sets to obtain greatly improved heuristics for the model of k-colorable semirandom graphs introduced by Blum and Spencer. For constant k, our results are optimal up to constant factors in the edge probabilities.. In the semirandom model for graph bisection, a random bisection (S; S) of the vertices is chosen. Each edge (u; v) 2 S S is independently chosen with probability q and each edge (u; v) 6 2 S S is independently chosen with probability p > q. The adversary may then arbitrarily remove edges in S S and add edges not in S S. Extending the work of Bop-pana, we give a heuristic that recovers this bisection with high probability when p ? q c p p log n=n, for c a suuciently large constant.

Semirandom Models as Benchmarks for Coloring Algorithms
Semirandom models generate problem instances by blending random and adversarial decisions, thus intermediating between the worst-case assumptions that may be overly pessimistic in many situations, and the easy pure random case. In the Gn,p,k random graph model, the n vertices are partitioned into k color classes each of size n/k. Then, every edge connecting two different color classes is includ...
متن کاملAbilities and Limitations of Spectral Graph Bisection
Spectral based heuristics belong to well-known commonly used methods which determines provably minimal graph bisection or outputs “fail” when the optimality cannot be certified. In this paper we focus on Boppana’s algorithm which belongs to one of the most prominent methods of this type. It is well known that the algorithm works well in the random planted bisection model – the standard class of...

We introduce the theory of identical or complete synchronization of identical oscillators in arbitrary networks. In addition, we introduce several graph theory concepts and results that augment the synchronization theory and tie is closely to random, semirandom, and regular networks. We then use the combined theories to explore and compare three types of semirandom networks for their efficacy i...
متن کاملColoring Semirandom Graphs
We study semirandom k-colorable graphs made up as follows. Partition the vertex set V = {1, . . . , n} randomly into k classes V1, . . . , Vk of equal size and include each Vi-Vj -edge with probability p independently (1 ≤ i < j ≤ k) to obtain a graph G0. Then, an adversary may add further Vi-Vj-edges (i 6= j) to G0, thereby completing the semirandom graph G = G∗n,p,k . We show that if np ≥ max...
متن کاملHybrid Graph Heuristics within a Hyper-heuristic Approach to Exam Timetabling Problems
This paper is concerned with the hybridization of two graph coloring heuristics (Saturation Degree and Largest Degree), and their application within a hyperheuristic for exam timetabling problems. Hyper-heuristics can be seen as algorithms which intelligently select appropriate algorithms/heuristics for solving a problem. We developed a Tabu Search based hyper-heuristic to search for heuristic ...
